HARRISBURG, July 22 -- State Rep. John Hornaman, D-Erie, announced that legislation he authored to allow local municipalities to institute a tax credit for volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel unanimously passed the state House this week.
"Now more than ever, as we struggle with our national and local economies, the need for volunteer emergency service personnel is at an all-time high," Hornaman said. "I developed this legislation because I think a tax credit for volunteers can serve as an important recruitment tool for local fire companies, who often struggle to retain firefighters on a volunteer level. It also represents a small token of appreciation for these brave souls who risk their lives to save others."
HB250 would establish the Municipal Volunteer Incentive Act, which would allow local governments to adopt earned income tax credits for volunteers as a financial incentive for recruitment and retention. The legislation includes volunteer Emergency Medical Services and rescue squad members as well as firefighters. Language was added to make sure the credit would apply even on a joint return. A county property tax credit and / or a school property tax credit may also be applied up to 20 percent against the taxpayer's property tax liability.
Thanks to the generousity of Cameron County EMS in Emporium, the Eldred Borough Fire Dept. is back in the ambulance business despite having lost both of their rigs in a tragic blaze over this past weekend. Emporium has loaned one of its ambulances to Eldred so that they can continue to provide a valuable service to their community. The vehicle is being housed in the Eldred Borough Main Fire Station which is located directly across the street from the structure that was destroyed by the fire.
The Officers and members of the Eldred Borough Fire Dept. would like to thank all of the area fire departments and ambulance services for offering their assistance in the department's time of need.
A big tip o'the helmet to Emporium for being willing to come to the aid of your brothers and sisters in Eldred.

Saturday was a busy day with multiple events in progress in the area. In Harrison Valley a benefit "poker run" was taking place. This event would ultimately involve almost 250 ATVs, UTVs and motorcycles that would cover a large cross country course that included the coverage area of both Dept. 20 and Dept. 47. This even was scheduled to begin at 1230 hrs at the start/finish point on Rt. in Harrison Twp. Members of Dept. 20 provided traffic control at the "hard road" crossings to help ensure that there were no incidents with autos on the highway. The department had also coordinated efforts for emergency medical coverage on the course in the event that there was an accident during the run.
Also scheduled to occur the same day was the American Eagles motorcycle club's "Rock-N-Roar" that was to come through the area on Route 49 with several hundred motorcycles as they covered a course that began and ended in Arkport, NY. This event also necessitated that Dept. 20 as well as Dept. 47 provide traffic control through their respective districts as the motorcade passed through the area.
Well, we all know what they say about the best laid plans...... The poker run got off as planned, after which Dept. 20 personnel returned to Station 20 to regroup and prepare for the Rock-N-Roar event. As they were about to head to their staging points for that event, Tioga County Fire Control called Station 20 via radio and advised there was a report from one of the medical personnel with the poker run that there had been an ATV accident with injury in the Loucks Mills area of the run. Chief 20 advised Tioga to dispatch Departments 20 & 47 for the incident.
